Presentation of the École hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL)
Founded in 1893 by Jacques Tschumi, the École hôtelière de Lausanne is the world's oldest and first hotel school. It opened its doors at the height of the Swiss tourism boom at the end of the 19th century, to meet the need for competent, qualified personnel.
In 2001, EHL introduced an EMBA program (Executive Master in Hospitality Administration), a postgraduate diploma in hotel and hospitality management from the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO).
In 2019, the school's application restaurant, "Berceau des sens", is awarded a Michelin star. This star is renewed in 2020. The school is the only one in the world to have a Michelin-starred restaurant for two consecutive years.
From the 2020s onwards, teaching takes into account the fact that the sustainable development of Swiss tourism is an issue for the future, according to Peter Varga, Professor of "Sustainable Hospitality Culture ". The teaching program has raised awareness of green nudge, which consists of encouraging "ecological behavior in a playful way".
In January 2022, the school announced that it was changing its name to EHL Hospitality Business School, an anglicism that, according to Inès Blal, its director, better reflects "the career prospects offered by the institution and its international orientation".
