On Monday, November 3, the EPFL community gathered at the Rolex Forum to welcome Marc Ph. Stoecklin, Head of Security Research at IBM Research Europe in Zurich and recipient of the 2024 Alumni Award, to give a Campus Lecture on the topic: “Quantum Readiness at Global Scale: Securing Billions of Systems for the Quantum Era.”

Marc Ph. Stoecklin is Principal Research Scientist at IBM Research Europe and has served as Head of Security Research since 2019. His career at IBM Research began with an internship he completed as part of his master's thesis in 2006. He has contributed to several cybersecurity projects, including key IBM technologies based on artificial intelligence to detect and combat cyber threats. He now leads the “Quantum Safe Cryptography” strategy at IBM Research, which allows him to work on many significant advances to secure the digital world on a global scale for the quantum era.

The advent of quantum computers threatens to compromise the current cryptographic systems that protect our data and digital infrastructure. In response to this challenge, quantum-resistant algorithms have recently been standardized, but their global deployment represents a colossal undertaking.

During his lecture, Marc Ph. Stoecklin explored the risks posed by quantum computing and the scientific and logistical challenges of a transition that must be carried out quickly to preserve the security of our digital world. Unprecedented coordination between governments, industries, and existing systems will be necessary to achieve this historic migration.

Thank you to Marc for his insightful presentation and to everyone who contributed to the success of this Campus Lecture.
