Dear All EPFL Alumni in Shanghai area,
We have a lot of EPFL Alumni working in Cutting-edge Technology and a lot of them are real leader in their respective field. Today we are extremely lucky to be able to invite Dr. Junqiu Liu specially from Shenzhen to give us a lecture in the field of optical chips.
Subject: Ultralow-loss hetereogneneous integrated photonics
The synthesis, distribution and processing of optical signals is ubiquitous in our information society. Conventional fiber optical technology is currently facing increasing demands that require high performance but with small size, weight and power consumption. In the last decade, with the advancement of CMOS technology and emerging materials, integrated photonics has become a mature technology that enables the generation, modulation, and detection of optical signals on-chip. Integrated photonics can resolve the bottlenecks limiting current optical telecommunications and datacenters. Among all materials used so far, silicon nitride featuring a wide transparency window and ultralow optical loss has become a mainstream platform together with silicon and indium phosphide. This talk will cover major recent advancements in heterogeneous ultralow-loss silicon nitride integrated photonics and its applications, particularly those achieved by the speaker in the last 5 years.

Dr. Junqiu Liu biography:
Dr. Junqiu Liu is currently a senior research fellow (PI) at Shenzhen International Quantum Academy and a tenure-track assistant professor at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). He received PhD from EPFL in 2020, MSc from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2016, and BSc from USTC in 2012.
His research is in the domains of integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, MEMS and microwave photonics. He has published more than 60 articles including 7 in Nature and 3 in Science. His PhD thesis entitled “Silicon Nitride Nonlinear Integrated Photonics” was awarded 2021 EPFL Doctorate Award, “For ground breaking experiments in the field of chip-scale frequency combs and the extraordinary record of scientific accomplishments”. His research has seeded several startups on integrated photonics.
