Swiss National Day Celebration with Professor Rachidi in NYC

Join us on Wednesday August 5 to celebrate Swiss National Day with Professor Rachidi. We will gather at Everdene Rooftop for drinks under the Empire State Building. We will also get a glimpse of his research on redirecting lightning discharge during thunderstorms to protect critical infrastructure.

Guiding lightning with High-Power Lasers: Experiments at Mount Säntis in Switzerland

In the talk, after a brief overview of lightning discharges, the lightning experimental facility at Mount Säntis in the Swiss Alps will be presented, as well as highlights of some of the key findings from the past ten years. We will then discuss in more details the experimental campaign carried out in 2021 in the framework of the European Laser Lightning Rod project (LLR).
This experiment provided evidence that high-power lasers can guide lightning discharges over several tens of meters.

Farhad Rachidi is a Titular Professor and Head of the Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory at EPFL. An IEEE Fellow, EMP Fellow, and Electromagnetics Academy Fellow, he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from EPFL in 1986 and 1991, respectively.
He later held research positions at EPFL, the University of Toronto, and Montena EMC.
He has authored over 400 peer-reviewed journal papers and presented more than 500 papers at international conferences.
