Visit of Marie-Thérèse Chappaz's winery (+ tasting)

Come and discover the Chappaz winery in Fully (VS), run by Marie-Thérèse Chappaz, on May 22, 2025. More information and registration to follow.

Present in the Valais since the Gallo-Roman period, almost 2000 years ago, the cultivation of vines is attested to in writings dating back to the 11th century. At the beginning of the 14th century, Petite Arvine, Humagne blanche, Rèze and Cornalin were already mentioned as grape varieties.

Before it was dammed, the Rhône periodically flooded the Fully region. The inhabitants of the plains regularly lost their crops and were therefore often poorer than those in the mountain villages. Sometimes, they could only survive on the chestnut trees in the commune. It was common for mountain dwellers to exchange wheat for vines belonging to plain dwellers. Thus, small hamlets around Fully, organized around a mazot with a cellar underneath, belonged to inhabitants of mountain villages. These mazots are still to be found today on the lower slopes, along with the scattered sentry boxes in the vineyards used to store tools and a few bottles.
