Conference

Decarbonizing our energy system is a feasible but daunting task. In this presentation we will explain:
- Why each unit of energy not produced by renewable energies will be produced by fossil fuels and why we will never run out of fossil fuels... (in the next 100 years).
- How and why photovoltaics should become the leading source of electricity globally within 8 to 12 years, and the major source of primary energy by 2050.
- Why and how China could or will save the world from global warming….
- All the wrong ideas about renewable energies and batteries (raw materials resources, gray energy, mining, etc.).
- The incredible technological and financial progress of the last two decades, still completely underestimated by many decision makers.
- How Switzerland brings multiple solutions in the field of solar, from cutting-edge cell and module technologies to the craziest solar architectural integration solutions!

Professor Ballif

Prof. Christophe Ballif is the director of the Photovoltaics and Thin-Film Electronics Laboratory at EPFL and the director of the Sustainable Energy Center at CSEM, which specializes in research and technology transfer.
With his teams, Christophe has contributed to numerous innovations, technology transfer, products, and start-up in the field of photovoltaics (PV) and energy. Through both structures, he collaborates with close to 40 companies in Switzerland and worldwide.
His current research and industrialization interests include battery manufacturing and battery management, materials and manufacturing processes for PV, high-efficiency crystalline and tandem perovskite/silicon solar cells, module technology and reliability, specialty PV products for building integration or mobility.
Finally, his teams work on multiple aspect of the digitalization of the energy world and on various management and optimization of energy systems. He is (co-) author of more than 600 scientific papers with an h-index of 100, as wells as of numerous patents. In 2016, Christophe received the Becquerel award for his contributions to the field of Photovoltaics. He is an elected member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences. He gives regular interviews for the Swiss media as well as conferences for a wider audience.
