The first Café Scientifique of the year was held on April 30, about two months after our first Apéro of the year. 

The event was held at Cozen O’Connor’s (www. downtown Vancouver office and was attended by 14 participants. Cozen O’Connoer sponsored the event providing both the venue and refreshments. On a beautiful sunny day, the views from the 25^th floor were truly spectacular!!!

Our speaker, Guillaume Le Bars, an EPFL PhD alumnus, currently working as a Computational Physicist at Type One Energy Group in Vancouver spoke of his passion pursuing the study of fusion energy. Guillaume expertly explained what fusion energy research. He delivered and engaging and accessible presentation, clearly explaining the fundamentals of fusion energy. Using a series of creative slides, he illustrated the different stages of fusion by comparing them to an outdoor music festival, making complex concepts easy to grasp. Guillaume also spoke about his personal journey into the field and outlined his future plans, including a return to academia at EPFL.

The presentation was followed by a lively question-and-answer session, during which most, if not all, attendees participated. Questions ranged from highly technical to more general topics, with some moments of humor throughout. The discussion was followed by informal networking over an excellent and varied selection of refreshments.

Our next event will be an Apéro on Thursday, July 29, starting at 6:00 PM at Tap & Barrel on Granville Island. We hope to secure a table or two on the patio to enjoy a quintessential Vancouver summer evening. We look forward to welcoming both existing and new members!
